Cool at first, quickly becomes a chore when your target score is like 300k or whatever. Again while it all looks really cool, I’m kinda getting a massive style over substance vibe gameplay wise. It’s like there’s always something in the way whenever i try to pull off the new barrel roll mechanic (which I’m honestly not fond of at all). It’s like everything is too big, and the AI’s all hang out really close together, making the races seem overcrowded or something I dunno. Everything feels so stiff, there’s too much emphasis on this sideshift technique to get round sharp bends - which took me ages to figure out, and while the game is very nice looking, it’s almost too busy/chaotic. Everything i loved about the controls in the ps1 games (and especially 3) is totally gone. So, fast forward to about a week ago, and for a pretty good deal i decided to buy a fat PS3, as it can play both ps1 and ps2, and obviously ps3 games too so I decided to give HD/Fury a try. I could wax lyrical about that game for days, it’s almost like it was a game made especially for me - it’s just perfect, the way it handles, how nimble the craft are and how shockingly good it looks for a ps1 game, the music, the fun little ‘tactical’ things you can do with force walls, cloaks and reflectors, everything, even how cool and trippy the prototype tracks look, it’s just so good! I’ve obviously hardly played any videogames throughout my life, but out of those that i have played, on any system and in any genre, Wipeout 3 SE is easily my favourite all time game. Eventually picking up 3SE over the summer and coming to the natural conclusion that that’s hands down the best one. I’ve been playing them all through this covid crisis and absolutely loving them. Until about a year ago, when i saw a second hand PS2 slim for £20 in the window at a local CEX and my first thought was that I’d love to have a go again at those wipeout games, so i bought it and as soon as i got home bought the PS1 wipeout trilogy from ebay as a bundle - at the time not even knowing about the Special Edition of 3 at all. So, decades went by and i’d barely picked up a controller, let alone actually owned any console or gaming PC. So Wip3out totally passed me by back then and by the time the PS2 launched I’d completely lost interest in gaming and didn’t bother buying one (got into DJing and music production instead - largely influenced by the soundtracks of those first two Wipeout games it must be said). The more accurate you are the more points and bonuses you will score.First off I’ll say that back in the 90’s I was a huge fan of Wipeout when they first came out, but by about ‘99-‘00 I’d started losing interest in gaming in general (I was 16-17 at the time so my interests had turned more toward getting drunk and trying to get laid). Score points by destroying the mines that have been strewn along the track and take out the bomb on each stage to earn additional points. Detonator mode introduces a brand new ship model to the game that tests both your piloting skills and your shooting accuracy as you accelerate through as many as 14 stages. Warning, avoid the ‘zone barriers’, obstacles left on the track by your opponents as they boost towards the target zone, hitting these can literally destroy your hopes of victory. Your choice is whether to use the bar to increase your speed and boost your ship ever closer to the target zone or absorb it to replenish vital lost energy. Acceleration is automatic as you swoop over zone pads to fill your zone bar. Forget those racing lines this is all about destruction, with the victor being the first to reach the target score. The Eliminator game mode allows you to release all that pent-up aggression as you use the full arsenal of Wipeout weaponry to destroy your opponents.
